We are back in the States until Jackson graduates from college on May 21. At the end of May, we embark on the final two-month leg of our family sabbatical (Japan, Korea and Mongolia). [Southern Africa blog post from the month of March coming soon!]
When planning our family sabbatical two years ago, we set aside this window to establish a foothold where we decided to settle. While we were traveling, we decided on Denver! We sold our NJ house last spring, still maintain a condo in Minnesota near Theo’s family, and have now just bought a home in Aurora, on the southeastern outskirts of the Denver metro area.
Conscious that it is a rare privilege to design the timeframe for moving to a place of our choice, we did a lot of research, and choosing Denver culminates a years-long process. We were super excited about the opportunity to live somewhere outside of the East Coast, where we had spent most of our adult lives.
Our top 3 reasons for choosing Denver:
Denver has tickled our fancy for many years, and has everything we want: vibrant art and music scene, growing diversity, people that are without exception friendly and kind (almost suspiciously so, says the East Coast transplant), top-notch education and medical care, a thriving commercial base, and lots of wide open spaces for us to explore with Athena and another dog we plan to add to the family in the fall. Friends and acquaintances have introduced us to different parts and aspects of the area, and we loved everything we saw.
Lifestyle. We spent over a month in the area last year, and as Hudson says, “I like the vibe”. It’s a more laid back, outdoorsy way of life and we love the more relaxed pace. We plan to explore many national parks from our new home, and camp and hike more than we did in NJ. All four seasons are equally charming.
MOUNTAINS! We can see the snow-capped Rockies from our living room and we see them everywhere we drive around town. I don’t think the Rockies will ever not take my breath away. Theo’s happy place is hiking in the mountains, and Hudson is into rock climbing and bouldering- no better place than here.
A side benefit: Hudson’s favorite NFL team is the Broncos, so living in Broncos Country will be fun!
We live about 20 minutes from the airport, 30 minutes from the mountains and our door is always open. Come enjoy the Rockies with us in our Goldilocks home!!
So excited to be a small cog in the wheel of your amazing journey! Congratulations!
I have enjoyed reading about every step of your worldwide adventures. Your'e detailed journaling is really bringing it to life! Congrats on the decision - Denver is such an amazing area.
